Most students of Japanese know this phrase to mean something like "The eyes say as much as the mouth." That reminds me of the Japanese online smiley system. You have ^_^ for "happy" versus the American : ). ;_; for "sad" versus the American : ( . It's like the idiom is manifest in modern text communication. NEATO HUH?!
